Meta Best Practices and AI Challenges

Why Expert Digital Management Matters

Meta (formerly Facebook) remains one of the most powerful advertising platforms for businesses looking to drive brand awareness, generate leads, and increase conversions—but it’s also more complex than ever. With evolving AI tools, platform updates, and rising competition in the digital ad space, getting the most from your Meta ad dollars requires more than just hitting the “boost” button.

At JB Communications, we help clients navigate the ever-changing world of Meta advertising with strategy, creativity, and performance-driven execution. Whether you’re running your first campaign or looking to scale, here’s what you need to know in 2025.

Best Practices for Building Out a Meta Ad Campaign

Success on Meta starts with a strategic and technical foundation. Here are key best practices our team follows:

1. Define Your Objective

Meta offers objectives like Awareness, Traffic, Engagement, Leads, and Sales. Choosing the correct one signals Meta’s algorithm to serve your ad to the right users for the right action.

2. Target the Right Audience

Targeting the right audience goes beyond geographic and demographic targeting. Additional considerations to improve your conversions and return on advertising spend, include:

  • Custom Audiences for retargeting site visitors, email lists, and video viewers
  • Lookalike Audiences to expand your reach based on your best customers
  • Behavioral and Interest-Based Audiences to connect with new prospects

Audience exclusions are equally important to avoid wasting spend on existing customers.

3. Create Versatile, Engaging Creatives

Meta rewards diverse content. We recommend using:

  • Video and Reels for attention-grabbing storytelling
  • Carousels to show multiple products or features
  • All three format sizes (1:1, 9:16, and 16:9) for placement optimization across feeds, stories, and reels

4. Use Strong Copy and CTAs

Great ads blend visuals and messaging. Headlines should be short and benefit-focused, and your main text should clearly outline the value. Calls-to-action (CTAs) like “Learn More” or “Get Offer” drive response.

5. Optimize the Landing Page

Clicks are wasted if your site doesn’t convert. Your landing page should be mobile-friendly, consistent with your ad messaging, and designed for fast, easy conversions. Meta, Google and other digital media effectively penalize poor landing pages. This usually does not effect your ad’s reach, but will make your ads more expensive and less effective in terms of delivery and conversions. The post-click experience is extremely important in your ad relevance and performance scoring.

6. Leverage Meta Pixel & Conversions API

Pixel tracking is essential for performance-based campaigns. Pair it with the Conversions API to ensure accurate reporting, especially in a post-cookie world.

7. Monitor and Optimize Frequently

Campaigns need frequent tuning. At JBC, we review performance daily and adjust based on data—cutting underperformers, scaling winners, and testing new versions regularly.

What’s New: 2025 Meta Ads Manager Changes

Meta Ads Manager has rolled out several updates in the last year:

  • Simplified Objective Selection: Meta consolidated objectives into broader categories (e.g., “Leads” now includes forms, messages, and calls).
  • Performance Comparison Tools: Enhanced A/B testing options make it easier to see what’s working at every level.
  • Budget Scheduling by Day and Hour: A major win for businesses that need to target peak hours or control delivery. This is one of JBC’s personal favorites. For example, it allows us to adjust the ad schedule to store hours for a CTA that involves a phone call.

These changes are great—but they also add complexity for users who aren’t familiar with Meta’s evolving interface.

Meta AI: Useful… But Not Flawless

Meta has heavily integrated AI into campaign management. Some of the features include:

  • Automated Text and Image Generation
  • Advantage+ Audience Targeting
  • Dynamic Creative Optimization

While these tools can improve scalability and reduce manual work, they’re not perfect.

Real Situations that Expose Flaws in Meta AI

It’s no secret that digital media companies such as Meta reward advertisers for using new tools. The JBC team has seen first-hand some of the flaws in Meta AI’s tools during our agency’s careful monitoring and A/B testing. We use AI as a tool—but not as a substitute for human strategy and review. Automation is powerful—but only when guided by strategy and oversight. Sometimes these AI tools cause additional work due to the flaws. Here are a few examples:

1. AI-generated headlines and descriptions often lack brand voice or context.

At JBC, we’ve seen how AI-generated ad content can miss the mark when it comes to brand voice and campaign goals—especially for high-end, experience-driven offerings. For example, one of our clients is a luxury outdoor lodge that offers premium fishing and hunting packages, complete with upscale lodging, gourmet meals, and expert-guided excursions. The goal of the campaign was to promote the full “stay and play” experience to affluent travelers seeking an all-inclusive outdoor getaway.

When relying on Meta’s AI-generated headlines and descriptions, the platform produced generic copy like “Book Your Fishing Trip Today” and “Enjoy a quick outdoor escape with guided tours”—messaging that positioned the offering as a basic day trip. While these headlines may generate clicks from casual outdoor enthusiasts, they completely overlook the luxury accommodations and multi-day package experience that define the brand.

In this case, the algorithm prioritized surface-level engagement over strategic context. And while the ads may have delivered a low cost-per-click, they failed to attract the high-value customers the business depends on. That’s why JBC closely oversees all creative and messaging—ensuring that automation works with the brand strategy, not against it.

2. Over-reliance on Advantage+ targeting can ignore important demographic or interest-based signals.

At JBC, we’ve seen firsthand that Meta’s Advantage+ targeting doesn’t always get it right. For instance, if we’re running a campaign for Cartier sunglasses targeting women aged 35 and older with household incomes in the top 5% to 25%, the algorithm may start expanding beyond that audience if it notices strong engagement from younger users—say, 20-somethings who admire the brand but aren’t financially ready to purchase.

As a result, Meta may begin prioritizing those users, shifting spend toward a less qualified audience. While this can make cost-per-click (CPC) appear efficient, the return on ad spend (ROAS) often declines—because those clicks aren’t translating into purchases or meaningful customer relationships.

That’s why we carefully monitor Advantage+ performance and adjust strategies to keep campaigns aligned with true buyer intent, not just surface-level engagement.

3. Creative auto-optimization sometimes favors the wrong combinations or the wrong information

At JBC, we’ve experienced firsthand how Meta’s creative auto-optimization can sometimes produce mismatched or misleading ad combinations—especially when pulling text from various parts of a landing page or creative set. One real example involved a hospitality client promoting a special event with a clear call to action, an event date, and a registration deadline. Despite properly structured content, Meta’s AI mistakenly selected the registration deadline as the event date and used it as the headline in a couple of placements. JBC immediately had to override these automations to fix this Meta faux pas.

Additionally, JBC has observed the algorithm pair headlines with imagery that has no direct connection – such as displaying a photo of a plated dish alongside a headline about room reservations.

While Meta’s automation tools aim to improve performance, they often prioritize clicks over clarity or accuracy.

Why You Shouldn’t Just Boost Posts

“Boosting” a post from your business page might seem easy, but it lacks the depth and control of Ads Manager. Boosting:

  • Limits your objective options
  • Doesn’t allow advanced targeting or exclusions
  • Offers less visibility into performance metrics
  • Wastes budget on impressions instead of conversions

Boosting is okay for quick visibility, but serious marketing goals need full campaign setup in Ads Manager.

Why an Experienced (and Creative) Agency Makes a Difference

Running Meta ads in 2025 isn’t a DIY task—it’s a strategic investment that demands equal parts data and creativity. The platform has evolved well beyond simple targeting and boosted posts. To stand out in today’s fast-scrolling, ad-saturated environment, you need more than technical know-how—you need a campaign that connects. That’s where partnering with an experienced, full-service agency like JB Communications makes all the difference.

At JBC, we don’t just place ads—we build full-funnel strategies that guide your audience from curiosity to conversion. Our in-house creative team designs high-impact visuals, sharp headlines, and engaging videos that are not only tailored for every Meta placement (Reels, Stories, Feed, etc.), but also crafted to reflect your brand’s voice and purpose.

Our campaigns are powered by insight, not guesswork. Using many tools like SEMrush and Meta’s audience analytics, we uncover real opportunities to reach the right people with the right message. We track and optimize for the metrics that actually drive growth—ROAS, cost-per-lead, customer lifetime value, and conversion rates—and we continually refine based on performance data.

But strategy and data alone don’t win hearts—or clicks. That’s why our creative solutions set us apart. Whether it’s designing a visually-driven campaign, developing themed ad series, or building custom landing pages that convert, JBC infuses every campaign with creative energy and marketing intelligence.

Many businesses waste thousands of dollars on ad campaigns that are technically correct but creatively bland—or creatively flashy but strategically weak. With JBC, you get the best of both worlds: a team that’s as comfortable brainstorming a bold new concept as we are analyzing campaign data and optimizing performance.

When you work with JB Communications, you’re not just buying ad space—you’re building a brand experience that resonates, converts, and grows.
